Business License Fees are based upon gross receipts and the tax rate imposed varies according to category. Anyone conducting a business with gross receipts over $1,000.00 may be required to obtain a business license. Out-of-county contractors with a total of over $25,000.00 gross receipts in Surry County may be required to obtain a business license. New Business Licenses must be obtained through the Commissioner’s Office.
Renewal application packages are mailed to existing businesses in January of each year. Renewals are due on or before March 1st of each year.
The Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office now offers the option to renew a business license online. The license holder must log-on using the e-Commissioner Options Page, enter a valid e-mail address and set up a pin number to begin the process. There is also an option to change a mailing address, telephone number or e-mail address.
After completing the application, click on “Pay Now Online”. There will be a 3% credit card service fee added to the transaction. Do not use the “Pay with PayPal” option; this will result in the transaction being voided.
Business owners who prefer to pay by check may mail a check, made payable to the Treasurer of Surry County, to the Commissioner of the Revenue at P. O. Box 35, Surry County, VA 23883. Please include a printed copy of the Business License Application Confirmation with the check.
All Business License renewals are subject to review by the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office. Once approved and payment received business owners will receive notification from the Commissioner of the Revenue.
Any new business must contact the Commissioner of the Revenue’s Office for an application.
Contractors will need to submit proof of a valid VA Contractors A, B or C License and a completed Contractor's Certificate of Workers Compensation Insurance Form 61-A. The Contractor’s Certificate of Workers’ Compensation Insurance should be filed online by using the online Contractor Certification Form, 61-A. Businesses must have a printed copy of the online acknowledgement in order to obtain or renew a Business License. For questions specific to filing this form, please contact the VWC Insurance Department by telephone at (804) 205-3586 or by email.
