Surry County Finance & Information Technology
The Department of Finance & Information Technology provides financial and computer support services to for all County operations and is responsible for the maintenance and dissemination of reliable and accurate financial data and reports. Duties include payroll, accounts payable, purchasing, budgeting, general accounting, personnel and financial reporting. The Finance Director coordinates and assists in the preparation of the annual financial report. The department is also responsible for establishing policies and guidelines specific to these functions.
Payroll: The Finance Department processes payroll for approximately 70 full-time and part time County employees. We are responsible for payroll taxes and the administration of employee benefits.
Accounts Payable: The Finance Department is responsible for paying all County invoices and printing accounts payable checks. Our department is responsible for Form 1099 reporting.
Purchasing: The Finance Department provides assistance in the issuance of Invitations to Bid and Requests for Proposals and is responsible for the issuance and approval of purchase orders and the County's bidders list.
Budget: The Finance Department works closely with County Administration and the Board of Supervisors in the development of the County's annual budget and capital improvement plan. The process normally begins in January with a budget orientation session followed by the assembling of budget requests from departments and agencies, budget work sessions, public hearings and concludes with final adoption of the budget by the Board of Supervisors normally in June.
General Accounting: The Finance Department is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and dependability of all financial transaction and reports. This includes oversight of the general ledger and the month-end and year end close processes.
