Mission: To ensure that all eligible Surry County Citizens are properly registered to vote and to serve the voters of Surry County in the most efficient, effective and friendly manner possible.

The Voter Registrar provides all voter registration services and maintains all voter records. If there is a change in any location of polling places or a person's voting status, the Registrar is responsible to notify the voter. This office is responsible for carrying out the directives of the State Board of Elections, the Virginia Code of Elections and the County Electoral Board.

Electoral Board:
John O. Newby, Chairman
Thomas S. Hardy, Vice-Chairman
Julian D. Lewis, Secretary

Registering to Vote:

To register to vote in Virginia, you must be a United States citizen, be a resident of Virginia, be 18 years old by the next general election, and had your rights restored if you have ever been convicted of a felony or declared mentally incapacitated. A voter application must be fully completed to be eligible to vote in Virginia. You may request a voter registration application or an absentee application from the Registrarís office in person or by mail. Voter registration applications are also available at any DMV office, the Department of Social Services, or Health Department.

Once the Registrar receives your completed application, it will be reviewed and if everything is filled out properly, a voter card will be mailed to you. The voter card will have your name, address, the name and address of your polling place, and the election district in which you are eligible to vote. If you should move, change your name, or if any information is incorrect on your card, please notify this office so you may continue to be a registered voter of Surry County.

Voting by Absentee Ballot:

Persons who are registered in Surry County may vote by absentee ballot if they have a disability or illness, expect to be away on business, on vacation, attending college, employed outside the United States, or in the military.  You may obtain an absentee ballot for absentee voting from the Registrar's office.
