Emergency Services Coordinator Honored

Mr. Ray Phelps, Surry County Emergency Services Coordinator, was recently awarded the Outstanding New Emergency Management Professionals Award through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management at the organization's annual conference in Hot Springs, Virginia.

Mr. Phelps is also a graduate of the Emergency Management Professional Program, Basic Academy Cohort 8.  He is responsible for coordinating the County's emergency response team, which includes the Claremont, Dendron and Surry Volunteer Fire Departments and the Surry County Volunteer Rescue Squad. The County responds to all natural and manmade disasters, such as weather events including hurricanes, tornados and snow storms; and provides assistance and training for preparedness for catastrophic events related to the Surry Nuclear Power Station.
